East of England Euro MP has sought some reassurance for British scientists taking part in the £70 billion Horizon 2020 EU research programme. Mrs Ford was one of the lead negotiators on establishing this programme. She spoke today to the EU Research Commissioner, Carlos Moedas. He confirmed that at the moment, UK researchers remain eligible to apply for EU funding grants as from a legal point of view, the referendum itself has not changed the position and the UK is still a member of the Single Market and a full member of the EU until the end of negotiations.
The Prime Minister told the House of Commons on Monday that all existing Horizon 2020 contracts will be honoured, however he also pointed out that it is not clear how these will be treated post leaving, or how science and research will be prioritised in negotiations by a future Prime Minister.
Mrs Ford says, "The East of England is home to world class scientists and more British based researchers apply to take part in EU collaborative projects than from any other country. The Commissioner has confirmed the comments he gave to the press on Monday that British scientists should continue to be treated on an equal basis with those from across the rest of Europe, at least at the moment. I will continue to watch this closely."
My Political Priorities
Economic Stability must come first. Without a strong economy we can not deliver a strong society. I work with businesses and consumers to keep Britain open for business, cutting red tape, boosting trade opportunities and helping to deliver jobs and growth for all.
I support Science and Research which is key to delivering better medical care, healthy food as well as the Innovation and Creative Industries which bring improved lifestyles for all our families.
Strong home Security is vital in today's uncertain world, which requires robust policing and defence and deep international relationships that we can depend on. I work with others to achieve this.
I care about the Countryside and the Environment and making sure that rural and urban communities flourish.
